Ways To Take IELTS

IELTS in Test Centres

IELTS on Paper

This version of the test is taken using pen and paper at an authorised IELTS test centre. It assesses your Listening, Reading, and Writing skills. Results are available 7 days after the test.

IELTS on Computer

This option is taken on a computer at an authorised IELTS testing facility. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are completed on the computer, while the Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner. Results are available within 48 hours of completing the test.

IELTS Online

This version allows you to take the test from home in a secure online environment. The format, timing, question types, and scoring criteria remain the same as the in-centre test. Results are released within 6–8 days after the test.

IELTS Syllabus

Listening:

Candidates listen to the audio only once and answer the questions simultaneously.

  • Paper-Based Test: After the audio ends, test-takers get 10 minutes to transfer their answers to the answer sheet.
  • Computer-Based Test: After completing the listening section, candidates get 2 minutes to review their answers.

Reading:

This section includes a wide range of question types such as multiple-choice questions, matching headings/information/sentence endings/features, and completion tasks (sentence, table, note, summary, flowchart, diagram). Short-answer questions are also included.

Writing:

Academic Module:

  • Task 1: Report writing based on charts, graphs, or diagrams (minimum 150 words).
  • Task 2: Essay writing on a given viewpoint, argument, or problem (minimum 250 words).

General Training Module:

  • Task 1: Letter writing (formal, semi-formal, or informal) based on a given prompt (minimum 150 words).
  • Task 2: Same essay-writing format as the Academic Module (minimum 250 words).

Speaking:

Conducted face-to-face with a trained IELTS examiner, usually on a separate day.

  • Part 1: Introduction and general questions on topics like work, studies, and hobbies.
  • Part 2: The candidate is given a topic card, one minute to prepare, and then must speak for up to two minutes.
  • Part 3: A two-way, in-depth discussion with the examiner on themes related to Part 2.

IELTS Scoring

  • IELTS is graded on a scale of 0 - 9, known as Band Scale.
  • Test Report Form has the test taker's overall score as well as scores for the Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
  • Generally, a score of at least 6 bands for UG and 6.5 bands for PG is required in each section.

IELTS One Skill Retake

  • You can now retake just one specific section of the test instead of repeating the entire exam.
  • This option is available only once within 60 days of your original test date.
